Excerpts from the training session I designed and delivered (below) show how I moved my school towards bridging the literacy gap of students who were not participating in regular home reading routines.
After analysing data from parent surveys and feedback from class teachers, it became clear that many of the families not running home reading routines were daunted about the time and energy they thought was needed to commit to the practice, including concerns their child would be resistant to more “work” after school.
I needed to change this cultural perception and did so by offering two versions of training sessions to show what a home reading routine could look like: Session 1- Regular, Relaxed and Conversational, and Session 2 - Guiding Your Child’s Independent Reading At Home.
This allowed parents to adopt the practice at an entry point comfortable to them. The training was made available online for wider audiences and the rate of home reading improved 30% in P-2, having ongoing literacy benefits for students as they progressed through the year levels.
